Endpoint Compliance: Automate macOS checks with Tines 3B

The problem: why manual endpoint compliance reviews don't scale

Every IT and security team is responsible for a basic but surprisingly hard question: are our devices actually compliant? For teams managing macOS fleets, that means confirming SIP, firewall, automatic updates, and FileVault encryption are enabled, and that every device is checking in regularly.

In practice, endpoint security management is split across tools that don't talk to each other. SimpleMDM (or another MDM) holds device-level configuration and check-in data. BambooHR or another HR system holds the source of truth on who's actually employed and when they started. Reconciling the two is usually a manual exercise: exporting device lists, cross-referencing employee rosters in a spreadsheet, and chasing down the laptops that haven't checked in for weeks.

This creates real gaps:

  • New hires without assigned devices fall through the cracks between onboarding and IT provisioning.

  • Offboarded employees may still show active devices if no one catches the mismatch.

  • Drifted security controls—a disabled firewall, a paused FileVault encryption, an update deferred one too many times—go unnoticed until an audit or incident forces the question.

  • Evidence for audits is scattered across tools, screenshots, and export files, making it hard to prove when a control was checked and what the result was.

None of this is because teams aren't paying attention. It's because automated endpoint management across HR and MDM systems typically requires custom scripting, scheduled jobs, and someone to own the glue code. A better process would pull employee and device data together automatically, flag the specific gaps that matter, and leave a trail of evidence that's easy to review and export, without requiring a dedicated integration project.

The hands-on solution: building it with Tines 3B

Tines 3B is an AI teammate that builds, runs, and maintains automation workflows from natural language. Rather than scripting an integration between your MDM and HR systems by hand, you describe what you want and 3B builds the workflow, including the logic, API calls, and dashboard.

This use case connects two categories of tools that show up constantly in endpoint compliance programs:

  • Mobile device management (MDM) platforms like SimpleMDM, which report device-level security posture: SIP status, firewall state, automatic updates, FileVault encryption, and last check-in time.

  • HR information systems like BambooHR, which hold the authoritative list of active employees, start dates, and status changes.

The result is a workflow available as a ready-to-import example in the Tines 3B example gallery: an employee device compliance dashboard that matches BambooHR employees against SimpleMDM devices, flags assignment gaps, and checks reported security controls.

You don't need to write the prompt yourself to use it. The example gallery entry can be imported directly into your Explore Edition tenant with one click, then connected to your own SimpleMDM and BambooHR accounts. From there, you can adjust the logic in plain language, for example asking 3B to add a new control check, change the Slack summary cadence, or include contractors in the employee match, without touching code.

How the workflow works

The workflow runs on a schedule (configurable at setup) and performs the following sequence:

  1. Pull active employees from BambooHR, including start date and employment status.

  2. Pull the device inventory from SimpleMDM, including reported security attributes and last check-in timestamp.

  3. Match employees to devices, identifying employees with no assigned device and devices with no matched employee.

  4. Evaluate each device's reported controls—SIP, firewall, automatic updates, FileVault, and check-in recency—against expected baselines.

  5. Build a dashboard consolidating employee assignment gaps, passing/failing/unknown control states, and device-level evidence.

  6. Send a scheduled Slack summary highlighting exceptions for the team to review.

Human input comes in at review: the dashboard and Slack summary surface exceptions, but a person decides what follow-up action to take, whether that's provisioning a device, prompting a re-check, or escalating a control failure.

What it connects

  • SimpleMDM's API for device inventory and reported security attributes

  • BambooHR's API for active employee records

  • Slack for scheduled summary notifications

  • A Tines-hosted dashboard with filtering and CSV export for audit-ready evidence

What it automates

  • Manual exports and spreadsheet reconciliation between HR and MDM data

  • The weekly or monthly scan for devices that haven't checked in

  • Identifying new hires without assigned devices or offboarded employees still holding active ones

  • Generating audit-ready evidence of control status without screenshotting individual device pages

How control is maintained

The workflow only reads from BambooHR and SimpleMDM, it doesn't modify device configurations or employee records, so there's no risk of unintended changes to production systems. Credentials are scoped to read access, the dashboard is permissioned to the team that needs it, and every evidence record is timestamped, giving you a defensible trail for audits. Any remediation (disabling an account, reassigning a device) remains a deliberate, human-initiated step outside the workflow.

The outcome

Instead of manually cross-referencing two systems and compiling evidence by hand, the team gets a continuously updated view: one dashboard covering every active employee and device, automated flagging of assignment and control gaps, and a scheduled Slack digest that surfaces only what needs attention. What used to be a recurring manual audit task becomes a standing, evidence-backed compliance check that runs itself between reviews.

Why build it with Tines 3B?

This workflow illustrates the core value of building with Tines 3B: you go from a plain-language description of the problem to a working, multi-system integration without writing integration code yourself. Once it's running, 3B's Autotune capability can help refine the logic over time, Autofix can catch and resolve issues before they break the schedule, and ongoing monitoring gives you visibility into whether the workflow is running as expected.

As your environment changes, add a new MDM, change your HR system, add device types, you can describe the change in natural language rather than rebuilding the integration from scratch.

If endpoint compliance is on your plate, this is a good first workflow to stand up. From there, teams often build related automations, like onboarding-triggered device provisioning or offboarding checks that revoke device access automatically.

Try it yourself: import the macOS endpoint compliance workflow from the Tines 3B example gallery, connect your own SimpleMDM and BambooHR accounts, and customize it in minutes with Tines 3B.
